On Saturday, July 9th, 2022, the Illinois Psychiatric Society participated in the American Psychiatric Association’s Moore Equity in Mental Health 5K. Seven locations were established throughout the state of Illinois, for members and their families to join in and participate. Members walked in Chicago, Evanston, Naperville, Peoria, Champaign, Springfield, and Benton. Many joined the groups while some decided to participate within their local community instead. IPS was proud to surpass its goal to raise $1,000 and actually came in second place nationally, raising over $4,000.

PEORIA:

In Peoria, we had a great turnout for the Moore Equity in Mental Health 5K. We had residents, families, animals, and hospital executives join us on the Rock Island Trail. We even all stuck around afterwards to enjoy each other's company for dinner and drinks at the restaurant in the park. We even were able to celebrate a birthday. Participants commented on how wonderful it was to have everyone get together. And we even had people mention their disappointment that they could not join up, but they were glad to be able to donate in show of support.

WESTERN SUBURBS:

The Western Suburb of Chicago IPS Team scheduled completed their 5K walk (but no running) in Naperville IL at their Riverwalk which comprises of 1.75 miles walking path along the riverfront, downtown and parks which was walked twice to ensure a minimum of a 5 K equivalent. We started our walk with food of the champions (doughnut holes) and synchronized the walk with our away teammate who participated at a different location. This year our team tripled in size ranging from students to mid-career teammates. We have a great time raising money for such an important cause and being able to enjoy such a beautiful walking path.

EVANSTON/NORTHERN SUBURBS:

The Evanston group for the Moore Equity in Mental Health 5K was small but mighty! Dr. Laura Miller and Eliza Hofman, along with family and friends, set off for a stroll along Lake Michigan around 9am. As a medical student, I appreciated the opportunity to hear about Dr. Miller's career working with women and reproductive psychiatry as we walked and enjoyed the beautiful morning. The walk created the perfect setting to connect, all while raising awareness and funds for this important cause. I encourage everyone to find a group and walk next year!

~Eliza Hofman

SPRINGFIELD:

My husband and I were actually able to make a nice, full day of the event. They initially started at the assigned park, and subsequently relocated to another park. Afterwards, they even relocated indoors (in the AC!) to finish off the last mile.

~Dr. Joy Houston

CHAMPAIGN:

Members of the Champaign, Illinois community again supported this year for the 5K. We held a successful second annual Moore 5K on July 9th in Champaign and had a great turn out of interested, motivated participants. This year we doubled our number of participants as well as are donations to this cause. Our walkers (we did not run) were 8 strong, including mental health providers (therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, residents), and members of the community, including a child, a toddler, and a grandmother. As well as our furry friend Teddy, the dog!

We met our donation goal of $400.00 and exceeded it, due to the generosity of the community.

We collected over $500.00 for this cause. All were excited to support the cause and though tired at the end of the 5K, after refreshment with some Oberweis ice cream treats, we were already looking forward to doing it again next year.

~Dr. Arden Barnett

CHICAGO:

For this important cause that the 5K was intended, IPS members coordinated with Chicago team leader and ECP Committee Chair, Dr. Shenoy. It was a beautiful morning when the registered participants met at the historic and beautiful Buckingham Fountain. Interestingly, arrangements for the popular music festival Lollapalooza were underway. The team walked from the fountain to the Navy Pier and back. Dr. Kimberly Meyers shared her experiences with working in the community-based sector. Dr. Michael Raida, the Chair of the Private Practice committee shared his experience of having to help coordinate multiple private practice psychiatrists through the pandemic. Dr. Kimberly Fenzl provided her insight into how acuity of patients has increased during the pandemic. Overall, we were happy to help raise money and participate in an important cause.
