Some Advice from our Panelists:

  • Finding a good mentor/s is the key to continue growth professionally as an ECP.

  • If you are interested in management roles, you will have a higher impact in the field of healthcare and psychiatry. Your expertise as a physician is invaluable in management roles. There are multiple avenues to obtain management related education. Pursue it if you can.

  • Keep up with current knowledge, including healthcare as a whole. For example, new advances in early psychiatry, digital health, how artificial intelligence is changing healthcare, etc.

  • Be humble to everyone including front desk staff, receptionists, etc. They not only see you as a team member and a team leader, but also as a role model.

  • Continue to have hobbies and interests outside of work life.

  • Know your worth. Do not let anybody undermine your worth(and undercut your salary). There are mentors willing to guide you how to negotiate.

  • Learn to say "no", to do things that you do not want to do. As physicians, we say "yes" too many times.

  • Have the courage to switch career paths if you feel like it. Mentors and colleagues can be very helpful to talk to. It can be scary to switch, but can also be very rewarding.

  • Finally, we all love what we do. Continue to love what you do and find happiness and content along the way.
