Become a Mentor for Medical Students
In early 2021, IPS developed a mentorship program for resident, fellow and ECP members to engage in a personalized program with attending mentors for guidance, career advice, or even general life advice. In 2022, in a joint effort with the newly formed IPS Medical Student committee, IPS launched a new mentorship program to allow resident/fellow members to serve as mentors for medical students.
Who is this program for?:
Residents/fellows to serve as mentors to medical student mentees. All involved in the mentoring program, MUST be an IPS member.
How can you join?:
Email IPS Administrative Coordinator, Meghan Englebrecht at mengelbrecht@ilpsych.org if interested in joining the program.
The Process:
New mentor-mentee pairings are matched on a monthly basis. If you do not hear from us within a couple weeks, please reach out!
Once IPS staff receives your inquiry, you will receive an email with a link to complete a brief form to officially sign up to be a mentor to medical students.
Mentor-mentee pairing will be assigned, and you will receive a welcome/introduction email connecting you with your mentee.
***Of note: mentees are not paired with mentors who have affiliation to their medical school. Our goal is to broaden access to mentorship beyond the mentee’s medical school. There are no formal rules regarding how often you need to meet, what method you use to interact (virtual, phone, in-person, etc.) but we do ask that you try to initiate contact with each other WITHIN 2 WEEKS of receiving your welcome email with official assignment of mentor-mentee pairing. For your first email only, we request that both mentor and mentee please REPLY ALL, so that we are at least aware that you have made initial contact with each other. Afterwards, all further communication may be between yourselves.
You will receive follow up surveys to gauge your experience with the program within 3 months of your pairing. If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback along the way, please let us know.

“This mentorship program has been invaluable and is such a unique offering. Thoughtful mentorship, especially for early career psychiatrists at pivotal, early stages of their career, can be life-changing -- it has been for me.

"This has been a great program and I’ve learned quite a bit from my mentor. I hope this pilot program continues."
