Mental Health while Studying for USMLE Step 1
By: Radhika Patel OMS-II
The second year of medical school can be particularly challenging due to the increased classroom workload, extracurricular responsibilities, and the pressure to pass Step 1. The study hours are endless, especially as the wintertime approaches and board preparation begins.
Students often feel a sense of isolation and anxiety while studying for Step 1 due to the extremely demanding and stressful nature of the exam.
Here are some important aspects of the exam that often take a toll on the mental health of medical students:
Intense Pressure: Step 1 is a crucial exam that students must pass to move forward in their medical career. This pressure leads to anxiety and stress for many students.
Fear of Failure: Success on this exam is determinant for future career prospects.
Comparison: Students often compare themselves to peers, creating a sense of competition which can affect self-esteem and individual stress.
Loneliness: Long study hours can lead to isolation from family and friends which can create feelings of loneliness.
To lessen these challenges, it is important to prioritize your mental health. Since starting medical school, I made it a priority to take care of mine, despite the long and tiring days spent studying.
Here are a few tips that I have that can help ensure preparation for Step 1 goes smoothly:
Self-Care: Prioritize yourself! Engage in regular exercise, eat well-balanced meals, and sleep eight hours. Taking breaks while studying can help you reduce stress and feel better.
Get Support: Reach out to classmates. It can provide a sense of comfort knowing that you are not alone.
Stress reduction: Engage in mindfulness techniques, such as meditation. The Headspace application offers a managing stress course that has been a great tool for me.
Set realistic goals: Break down study material into manageable portions. Remember to incorporate breaks and other commitments.
Didactic years in medical school are very demanding, especially with the added stress of a Board exam. It's important to remember that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and to take care of yourself on the journey there.
Give yourself some grace on the hard days that will come and remember that you are capable!
