Contract Negotiations:
A Panel Discussion from Different Perspectives

Tuesday, January 9, 2024
7-8 pm

Follow this link to join the meeting:
https://northwestern.zoom.us/j/97758604047
Meeting ID: 977 5860 4047

Dr. Jordan Romero - will cover things I wish I'd known and questions I wish I'd asked prior to accepting my first position as an outpatient, private-practice attending.

Jordan Romero, M.D. is a board-certified General Adult Psychiatrist who received his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his General Psychiatry residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School. His clinical interests include psychopharmacology and psychotherapy of anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, bipolar disorders, and substance abuse disorders. Dr. Romero is available for initial evaluations, second opinion consultations, as well as ongoing medication management and psychotherapy of adult patients.

Dr. Joseph Willuweit - will discuss 3-5 specific contract provisions that attendees should be specifically attuned to (e.g. restrictive covenants, early termination, indemnity, incentive-based comp).  With any remaining time and in the Q&A, he will discuss general approach to employment negotiations, and in particular why it is important to give contract review/negotiation the appropriate time and attention – that the “legal stuff” (which may not seem like a priority) can have significant impact on a physician’s day-to-day and overall satisfaction in the position.

Mr. Willuweit concentrates his practice in mental health law and confidentiality, risk management, health care law, professional licensure, and guardianship and probate matters. Prior to Monahan Law Group, Mr. Willuweit completed internships in the general counsel's office at both a Chicago-based hospital and a national healthcare professional association, in addition to the city of Chicago. Further, he volunteered at the Pro Se Adult Guardianship Help Desk for the Cook County Circuit Court.  Mr. Willuweit received his J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, where he served as Senior Editor of the Annals of Health Law and was involved with the Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy including planning and coordinating the 2015 Access to Health Field Study in McAllen, Texas. He received his undergraduate degrees from Loyola University Chicago where he graduated from the Interdisciplinary Honors Program and was active in the Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity.

Topic: Premenstrual Mood Disorders: Advances in Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, and Treatment
Summary: Premenstrual Mood Disorders (PMDs) occupy a complex space at the intersection of biological sex and gendered experience. While most cycling individuals do not experience distressing or impairing premenstrual mood symptoms, a substantial minority experience marked changes in emotion and behavior that require medical diagnosis and treatment. Steady progress across the last 30 years has led to the establishment of the Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder diagnosis in the DSM-5, as well as the development of a substantial empirical knowledge base regarding the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and evidence-based treatment of PMDs. In this talk, I will review critical aspects of the literature on PMDs while sharing insights from mechanistic clinical trials in my own laboratory.

REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS CLOSED!

Meet our Guest Speaker:

Tory Eisenlohr-Moul, PhD

Positions: I am an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at UIC. I am a Clinical Psychologist with specialized fellowship training in both suicide and the pathophysiology of reproductive mood disorders -- particularly premenstrual disorders. I also serve as an Associate Director of the Medical Scientist Training Program at UIC, and volunteer as the chair of the Clinical Advisory Board at a nonprofit focused on premenstrual mood disorders (International Association for Premenstrual Disorders).

Science: As a scientist, I work primarily with mechanistic randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and longitudinal observation studies to clarify how ovarian steroids alter transdiagnostic RDoC constructs (e.g., processing of loss and threat) and related phenotypes (particularly suicidality and alcohol use) in susceptible females. My NIMH-funded trials (K99/R00MH109667; RF1MH120843) examine the effects of natural changes in neuroactive steroids (vs. exogenous steroid stabilization) on transdiagnostic mechanisms of proximal suicide risk during the perimenstrual weeks of the menstrual cycle. My work in this area has provided the first evidence for the feasibility and safety of conducting experimental steroid manipulation studies in patients living with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Results of the first trials indicate that perimenstrual hormone stabilization (particularly of estrogen) prevents the increase in depression and suicidal ideation that is observed under placebo during the perimenstrual phase. Recently, I have also been awarded collaborative grants to study the role of the menstrual cycle in (1) adolescent suicidal ideation and behavior (R01MH122446), (2) alcohol use (R21AA028736), (3) ADHD (R01MH119119), and borderline personality disorder (R01MH126940). I am passionate about training early career scientists and empowering colleagues to conduct rigorous scientific work on the menstrual cycle and mental health.

2023 Virtual Series:
Psychiatry in the 21st Century: Where Might the Future Take Us?

Join us as we explore advances in modern psychiatric treatments straight from the experts. Expect to hear about a range of topics from interventional psychiatry updates and the new TAAR1 receptor to updates on the current state of cannabis and psychedelic research.

This is a 4-part series with sessions falling on the last Thursday of the month between January and April 2023. Sessions will run from 6:30-8 p.m.

Upcoming Sessions:

Addressing Cannabis Use in a Changing Legal Landscape
April 27
Guest Speaker: Jesse D. Hinckley, MD, PhD

We will discuss the impact of cannabis legalization, including product availability, potency, and modes of use; perception of harm; and prevalence of use among adolescents and adults. Considering ongoing neurodevelopment, we will review the impact of cannabis use in adolescents and young adults. We will then explore the potential impact of cannabis use on comorbid mental health conditions. Finally, we will discuss how to discuss cannabis use with patients and evidence-based treatments for cannabis use disorder.

Dr. Jesse Hinckley graduated magna cum laude with his bachelor of science in neuroscience from Brigham Young University in 2005. After a short stent as a data analyst for the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) at Myriad Genetics, he matriculated into the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Iowa. Dr. Hinckley transferred to the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 2008, and he graduated with his MD and PhD in Human Medical Genetics and Genomics in 2015. Upon graduation, Dr. Hinckley remained at the University of Colorado, where he completed his general psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship. Dr. Hinckley joined the faculty at the University of Colorado thereafter. He is an assistant professor in the Division of Addiction Research, Treatment & Prevention within the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Hinckley currently serves as the Director of Adolescent Psychiatric Services for the Addiction Research and Treatment Services program and Associate Medical Director of psychiatric emergency services at UCHealth. He is co-founder and co-director of the Addiction Biology Lab at the University. Dr. Hinckley’s primary research interests include better understanding the development of substance use disorders in adolescents, the interaction between substance use problems and mental health disorders, and how to effectively treat comorbid disorders. He is particularly interested in better understanding the biology of how cannabis use affects the developing adolescent. Dr. Hinckley and his wife are foster parents, adding to his understanding and appreciation of how substance use affects teenagers and their families.
