Annual Meeting
2024 IPS Annual Meeting:
Extending Our Reach: Building the Psychiatry Workforce of the Future
Saturday, October 5
Holiday Inn Countryside
6201 Joliet Road, Countryside, IL 60525
ABOUT:
Psychiatrists have been in short supply for as long as most of us can recall. Even prior to the pandemic, workforce projections estimated that we would likely still be functioning at a deficit by the year 2050. Yet, the pandemic only heightened the need for psychiatric care. How then, do we extend our reach as psychiatrists to ensure quality mental health care for a population with growing needs?
Join us at the IPS Annual Meeting as we focus on Extending Our Reach: Building the Psychiatry Workforce of the Future. We’ll learn together about mental health expansion efforts through the Illinois Behavioral Health Workforce Center, how to best partner with advanced practice providers so that psychiatrists and APPs are both practicing at the top of their scope and providing quality patient care, and what it means to be a general psychiatrist in the current practice environment.
We’ll also be hosting our annual poster competition and Awards Dinner, We will welcome both our keynote speaker, APA President, Dr. Ramaswamy Viswanathan who will open the meeting, and APA President-Elect, Dr. Theresa Miskimen Rivera who will speak at our awards dinner. We’ll be recognizing our outstanding members, as well as the second annual recipient of the Carl C. Bell Award. Come socialize with your fellow members as we all learn together and celebrate the accomplishments of our organization and our members!

Adam M. Brenner, M.D.
Editor-in-Chief, Academic Psychiatry; Professor of Psychiatry and Distinguished Teaching Professor; Vice Chair for
Education and Residency Training Director in Psychiatry; University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
About this session: In the face of surging public mental health challenges, we should rethink the identity and training of
general psychiatrists.

In the Same Sandbox: Effective Working Relationships with PAs and ARNPs
Rebecca Lundquist, MD, DFAPA
Program Director of the Broadlawns-UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency
About this session: Despite many new psychiatry residencies and multiple new medical schools opening in the last few years with more to
come, it has become clear that there will not be enough psychiatrists in the U.S. to serve the needs of our population in any of our lifetimes. The
PA and NP roles were designed decades ago to be utilized very differently than we use them today. It is time to begin to have crucial
conversations about both the volumes of care needed as well as quality and safety of care provided.

Topic: Premenstrual Mood Disorders: Advances in Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, and Treatment
Summary: Premenstrual Mood Disorders (PMDs) occupy a complex space at the intersection of biological sex and gendered experience. While most cycling individuals do not experience distressing or impairing premenstrual mood symptoms, a substantial minority experience marked changes in emotion and behavior that require medical diagnosis and treatment. Steady progress across the last 30 years has led to the establishment of the Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder diagnosis in the DSM-5, as well as the development of a substantial empirical knowledge base regarding the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and evidence-based treatment of PMDs. In this talk, I will review critical aspects of the literature on PMDs while sharing insights from mechanistic clinical trials in my own laboratory.
REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS CLOSED!
Meet our Guest Speaker:
Tory Eisenlohr-Moul, PhD
Positions: I am an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at UIC. I am a Clinical Psychologist with specialized fellowship training in both suicide and the pathophysiology of reproductive mood disorders -- particularly premenstrual disorders. I also serve as an Associate Director of the Medical Scientist Training Program at UIC, and volunteer as the chair of the Clinical Advisory Board at a nonprofit focused on premenstrual mood disorders (International Association for Premenstrual Disorders).
Science: As a scientist, I work primarily with mechanistic randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and longitudinal observation studies to clarify how ovarian steroids alter transdiagnostic RDoC constructs (e.g., processing of loss and threat) and related phenotypes (particularly suicidality and alcohol use) in susceptible females. My NIMH-funded trials (K99/R00MH109667; RF1MH120843) examine the effects of natural changes in neuroactive steroids (vs. exogenous steroid stabilization) on transdiagnostic mechanisms of proximal suicide risk during the perimenstrual weeks of the menstrual cycle. My work in this area has provided the first evidence for the feasibility and safety of conducting experimental steroid manipulation studies in patients living with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Results of the first trials indicate that perimenstrual hormone stabilization (particularly of estrogen) prevents the increase in depression and suicidal ideation that is observed under placebo during the perimenstrual phase. Recently, I have also been awarded collaborative grants to study the role of the menstrual cycle in (1) adolescent suicidal ideation and behavior (R01MH122446), (2) alcohol use (R21AA028736), (3) ADHD (R01MH119119), and borderline personality disorder (R01MH126940). I am passionate about training early career scientists and empowering colleagues to conduct rigorous scientific work on the menstrual cycle and mental health.

Effective interdisciplinary communication, collaboration and advocacy between physicians who primarily work with youth (e.g., pediatricians; child and adolescent psychiatrists), as well as quality improvement in healthcare systems and structural determinants of health will also be addressed.
OBJECTIVES:
Recognize clinical presentations of children and adolescents with atypical neurodevelopment (e.g., detecting variability in presentation of autism spectrum disorder).
Differentiate types of mood dysregulation and challenges in self-regulation (e.g., bipolar disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder).
Determine appropriate action when a child or adolescent presents with suicidal ideation (e.g., assess risk and protective factors).
Discuss changes in practice models of clinical care and interprofessional collaboration that increase access to mental health care (e.g., addressing systems of care).

Addressing Cannabis Use in a Changing Legal Landscape
April 27
Guest Speaker: Jesse D. Hinckley, MD, PhD
We will discuss the impact of cannabis legalization, including product availability, potency, and modes of use; perception of harm; and prevalence of use among adolescents and adults. Considering ongoing neurodevelopment, we will review the impact of cannabis use in adolescents and young adults. We will then explore the potential impact of cannabis use on comorbid mental health conditions. Finally, we will discuss how to discuss cannabis use with patients and evidence-based treatments for cannabis use disorder.
Dr. Jesse Hinckley graduated magna cum laude with his bachelor of science in neuroscience from Brigham Young University in 2005. After a short stent as a data analyst for the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) at Myriad Genetics, he matriculated into the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Iowa. Dr. Hinckley transferred to the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 2008, and he graduated with his MD and PhD in Human Medical Genetics and Genomics in 2015. Upon graduation, Dr. Hinckley remained at the University of Colorado, where he completed his general psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship. Dr. Hinckley joined the faculty at the University of Colorado thereafter. He is an assistant professor in the Division of Addiction Research, Treatment & Prevention within the Department of Psychiatry.
